What an ATS looks for in your CV
Most medium and large employers filter applications with an ATS before a person reads them. These are the things that help most to get past that first filter:
- Standard section headings: "Experience", "Education", "Skills". Creative headings confuse automated parsers.
- A simple, single-column layout. Tables, columns and icons can scramble or drop parts of your text.
- The words from the job ad, written the way the ad writes them. If it asks for "project management", say exactly that, not only a synonym.
- Clear, consistent dates for every role (for example, "03/2021 – 06/2024").
- Real text, not an image. A scanned PDF or a CV saved as a picture cannot be read.
